History

The Outer Banks' most classic and one of the oldest real surf shops you'll find, Secret Spot has been serving the hardcore and the surfing lifestyle for nearly 30 years at the same location. Our surf board label is one of, if not the oldest labels started on the Outer Banks in 1977.

The founder/shaper Steve Hess started shaping in 1971/72 era with influences from some of the world's best shapers: names like Dick Brewer, Gerry Lopez, Skip Frye, Terry Fitzgerald, Hank Warner, Joey Cabell, Monty Smith, and many others that he worked with. Steve's boards have been ridden not only by many of the Outer Banks best surfers but also by many others world wide. From Hawaii to Puerto Rico, California, Australia and other locals. Most recently the topped-ranked male and female surfers in the Philippines ride Steve's shapes. Our motto has always been "Live your dreams" and by having moved to the Philippine Islands the last ten years that's just what Steve is doing. There with top surfers he does research and development of new shapes and up to date designs.

Partner and best friend Hank Warner of San Diego is one of the world's top shapers and continues to help mold Secret Spot Surf boards into what it is today, shaping most of the boards being sold in the store.

Leanne Robinson who has managed the store for the last five years is one of the top East Coast women surfers. She has extensive knowledge of the sport and has traveled numerous locations spanning the globe surfing world-class waves. Leanne is respected in the surfing industry for her knowledge in and out of the water and runs the store true to its roots.
